Few, Little, Less, Fewer 용법

Few, little, less, fewer 는 뉘앙스로 느낌을 알려고 하기 보다, 정확한 문법 규칙을 알아 놓는 것이 확실하다. 

몇 가지 관련 문법에 대해 소개 하고자 한다.

 

1. few, little 은 명사로도 쓰일 수 있다.

It is a part of the world visited by few.

Do you want a chocolate? There's still a few left.

Little is known about the painter's early life.

 

2. Quite a few 은 조금이 아니라 "quite a large number"를 뜻한다. 

 She's been away from work for quite a few weeks.

 

3. 적은 양을 의미할 때(small number/amount), what few / what little

She gave what little money she had in her purse to the man.

What few visitors we have are always made welcome.

 

4. Formal writing (academic writing)에서는 few / little 로 쓴다. 

The results take little account of personal preference. 

 

5. Less 는 불가산 명사 (셀 수 없는)에 쓰인다.

You should eat less pasta.

 

6. Fewer 는 복수의 가산 명사(셀 수 있는)에 쓰인다.

There are fewer cars on the road today.

 

7. 거리나 돈의 양을 표현 할 때는  less than을 쓴다. (fewer than 안됨)

The beach is less than a mile away. 

 

8. 비율(%), 시간, 양을 표현할 때는 no less than을 쓴다. 

Profits have increased by no less than 95% in the last year.
